KENTUCKY RALLIES AGAIN TO CLAIM 2ND TITLE IN 3 YEARS
Scottman joins the money gang, claiming fourth place

Put #2S Kentucky down by 10 or more in the second half and watch the Wildcats win. Each of Kentucky's last three games saw them trail by double-digits in the second half. Like the previous two games, KY exploded late in the second half and quickly went from four down to three up late in the game and eventually held off the #3W Utah, 78-69, at the Alamodome in San Antonio. It was Kentucky's second NCAA title in the past 3 years (won in '96, lost in '97). The Utes ran out of gas as the game wore on and couldn't hold onto the lead.

More importantly, with the total points at 147 for tonight's game, the fourth place prize of $20 goes to SCOTTMAN, who was off by just one point (146), the best guess of the pack. JAYBIAN III was only off by 2 (145). The four-way tie for fourth place was broken with the game, with the final order being SCOTTMAN, BUCKEYE MIKE (off by 11), MONEY (17), and POINT MAN (41). Also, SNOW SPICE (5) claimed eighth over PIPI GIRL (26); KADIAN (13) breaks the 3-way tie for 12th, leaving EN FUEGO (18), and JOON (146) for 13th and 14th; FOOT DOCTOR (8) takes 16th over ALL 2 EASY (10) and LUCKY FROM SF (13); and LENNY (13) will take little joy of just getting 25th place over PREKI THE BOMB (16) thanks to a late Utah 3-pointer and two free throws.

For the second straight year, no one picked the NCAA Champion ANNA COME LATELY, our champion, had Utah to win it all but fell short. However, her 13-point margin of victory set a new HWCI NCAA record, beating out JAYBIAN's 5-point victory in 1996.

You only have two months to peddle some change to get your $10 you lost in the NCAA Tourney before the 1st HWCI WC98 Pool begins! The World Cup of Soccer begins on June 10 and ends on July 12 featuring 32 nations in France. Played every four years, you will be able to pick the winners of 48 round-robin games before the competition takes on a "Sweet 16" type of bracket. Details on scoring and how the pool will work are still being worked out, but expect complete instructions on how to enter and submit your picks in mid-May. It will $10 to enter and you can start preparing now, since the teams are already known and games already scheduled. And unlike the NCAA, all 64 games will be shown live (ABC, ESPN/espn2, Univision) or same-day delay. Check out http://www.fifa.com for a schedule and teams participating. This new pool probably won't reach the status the HWCI NCAA Pool has, but we have at least five participants so far and are hoping for 10-15.

Notes: 48 points is the lowest total of any leader after Round 1 (previous three years had leaders with 52 points)... this year was the first year that at least one person picked each of the 32 first-round games correctly- and that continued into the first four games completed on 3/15 (44 straight) before Valpo beat Florida St... ANNA COME LATELY ties JAYBIAN's 1996 record of leading after 5 of the 6 rounds of play... twenty people finished with 100 points or higher.
