IT WAS A DOG OF A GAME; UCONN WINS 3RD TITLE
Krispy Kremer rallies to win his first pool title

CERRITOS, CA (smt)-  When I thought it was going to be a low-scoring game, I just thought like last year with Duke.  This was worse.  #3W-UConn once again rose from the West and got their 3rd title beating #8SE-Bulter, 53-41.  Each team scored 19 points in one half and Butler hit a record low 18.8% from the field and only 3 2-pointers.  Both teams combined for just 41 points in the first half and Butler was competitive in the first half by making 5 three-pointers.  The Huskies won their first title as a #1 seed in the West in '99, as a #2 seed in the West in '04, and now as a #3 seed in the West.  And in the end, UConn coach Jim Calhoun picked up his 3rd title but is suspended for the first three games next year.  And, in his *classy* style, he neglected to acknowledge Butler in his acceptance speech.  What a douche.

UConn was picked by just two people.  It propelled an amazing run by Roy W (Krispy Kremer) from 70th after the first weekend to winning his first HWCI NCAA Pool title and Charles D (BINLADEN) snuck into 6th.  David F (The Mighty Mobelfakta) had to settle for 2nd while Sam S (TheLakeShow) beat Craig S (Craig) in the tiebreaker to take 3rd.  Ted J (MB Camel Jockies) took 5th.  Craig fell from 1st to 2nd to 4th in the past three days.  But it gives me pleasure in knowing that I don't have to call a nickname like "Craig" a winner in our pool.  Next time, a more creative nickname!  We have five new winners with 3 picking up money on their second try.  Krispy Kremer became just the 4th person to win the title having never led after any tournament day (all in the past 8 years) and the 6th to win it on the last day (all in the past 8 years).  In the Bonus, the Big East won the winningest conference with 13 wins and Blakeley H (For Narnia) won the tiebreaker to win the $40 Bonus over Troy B (Buzzer Beaters).  No one guessed the correct total points in the final and everyone was over.  Joker's Wild was closest just 14 points off (had Butler won, he would've won the 4-way tiebreaker for 6th!) while Dr Fun was 99 points off!

Prize Winner Nickname Money Won Years in Pool # Times Won

3rd Sam S TheLakeShow $ 175 4 1
4th Craig S Craig $ 120 5 1

Bonus Blakeley H For Narnia $  40 2 1

Tids & Bits -  Chas Croix1 and Pack Rat were the only ones to get 2 of the Final Four teams correct but fell short of money finishing 12th and 53rd... UConn is 22-0 against non-Big-East teams; 14-0 in tourney games... Butler didn't get an inside basket until it was 41-28 (was 0-21)... Butler also had crazy field goal droughts going 6:01 in the 1st half and 8:18 in the 2nd half without a basket... it was only 4-3 UConn 4:40 into the game... Butler is the 4th team to lose consecutive title games (not quite Buffalo Bills territory)... while Bulter rattled off 33 3-pointers (making 9), UConn was just 1/11... the 112 points for the pool winner is the lowest ever (was 116 in '97)... the leader after the first two rounds has not won money since '07.. Roy W finished dead last in the First Four for Charity and but won 1st when it mattered... Krispy Kremer had just a 5.9% to win money and BINLADEN had just a 3.9% chance for money when the first possibilities were released after the first weekend... BINLADEN was 88th after the first 3 rounds... the 84.2 point average and 34.5 win average is the worst-ever (topping last year's 89.3 and 35.1)... for the 13th straight year, someone picked the correct champion... the 2.91 elimination average (where 2 is after the Sweet 16 and 6 is winning money) is the lowest-ever, despite the addition of a 6th money spot topping last year's record low of 2.92...
