Issue # 0.0.0 "It's the Tournament, Stupid"
[ Home | Updates ]

Once and Future Fans,

Here is your annual official invitation to join our annual official NCAA tournament pool. For those of you who haven't been fully indoctrinated into March Madness, I encourage you to take a nice long lunch this coming Thursday or Friday, find a sports bar, and take in the tournament. You'll probably get to see four games televised simultaneously. Four games and eight destinies unfolding in front of millions of viewers. Eight teams will scramble and struggle and speed and sour for their universities. Four teams will win, thousands of fans will roar, and players will exalt in celebrating the single most exhilarating moment of their lives. Four teams will be eliminated, cheerleaders will cry, and inconsolable, heartbroken players will fall to the floor in utter despair. Legends will be made. Lifelong memories will be forged. All this during your lunch break. Hopefully then, you'll understand why coaches, players, students, and fans are so passionate about this stuff.

But who will you root for? That's easy: the teams that you pick in our annual NCAA tourney pool. This is our ninth year doing this, and most things are still the same: all entry money goes back out as prize money, easy online entry form, regular e-mail updates from Scott, etc. But there are a few changes this year. Everything is detailed on the website. Here are the basics. For more detail, read below.

Website: http://www.hwci.com/ncaa
Entry Fee: $10
Entry Form Available: Sunday night, March 16, 2003
Entry Deadline: 9 am, Thursday, March 20, 2003
Entry Fee Deadline: Friday, March 21, 2003
For those of you who have entered before, welcome back! For all you first-timers, we hope you'll see why we do this every March. E-mail us at ncaa(at)hwci.com if you have any questions. Enjoy the ride!

Changes:

************************************************
No more free bonus entries for referrals
************************************************
This was getting a little out of hand. And anyways, shouldn't the incentive to "recruit" be the simple joy of spreading the excitement that is the shared experience of the NCAA tournament? For most of you, probably not :-( But we'll find out.

************************************************
Possible "Wild Card" categories
************************************************
Depending on how many entries we get this year, we were hoping to add a little excitement for those that fall out of the running for the first four places in the later rounds. "Hit-or-miss" categories like correctly predicting the lowest seed to advance into the 3rd or 4th round, total points scored in any given round, best conference win total, etc. We'll finalize on this later and keep you all updated.

************************************************
Entry fee deadline moved up to 2nd day of tournament (March 21, 2003)
************************************************
After receiving a couple deadbeat entries last year, I've decided to be more strict on the entry fee deadline. It's simply not fair for people to sit back and watch the first two rounds to see how they did before deciding whether or not to send their money in (even though half of the time the ultimate winners don't lead in the standings after 2 rounds). Thus, we're moving the deadline up. There are three basic methods for payment:

1. Personally hand the $10 fee to an HWCI member by March 21
2. Over the internet via
PayPal by March 21
3. By check sent by snail mail (mailed and postmarked by March 20, the first day of the tournament). Please mail them to:

David Feng [email us at ncaa(at)hwci.com for a snail mail address]

Important exception: If you have an HWCI member who can vouch for you and front your money, this is not a hard deadline. For all others, please get acquainted with PayPal.

Paying with PayPal

PayPal is the most popular and established method of transferring funds between independent parties over the internet. Personal accounts are free. To pay via PayPal, you can click on this link.

If you don't already have a PayPal account, you'll need to sign up for one. Because [email protected] is a personal PayPal account (as opposed to Business or Premium), we can not accept credit card payments. If you try to send a credit card payment, it will be rejected. This means you will have to set up your PayPal account to withdraw from a verifiable bank account. To do this, you'll need your bank account number and routing number ready.

Remember, if you have any questions, please write to ncaa(at)hwci.com.
