Issue # 2.1.1 "Close but no cigar..."

                     2000 HWCI NCAA TOURNAMENT POOL
                     ==============================

UNDERDOGS PROVIDE LOTS OF EXCITEMENT BUT ONLY ONE VICTORY IN DAY ONE
Twenty entries start the pool with at least 14 wins

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- #10W-Gonzaga provided the only upset, a mild one
at that, of the day but there were several close calls. #6-W Purdue (62-61),
#2-W St. John's (56-55), #4-W LSU (61-58), #8-MW Utah (44-43), and
#5-MW Kentucky (63-60, 2 OT) all trailed very late in the game before pulling
out victories. #7-MW Auburn nearly blew a 9-point lead with 12 seconds left
and #2-MW Iowa St. blew a 19-point lead before prevailing. #8-W Wisconsin,
#5-W Texas, #4-MW Syracuse, and #6-MW UCLA pulled away late for wins.
#1-W Arizona, #3-W Oklahoma, #1-MW Michigan St. (led 20-3), and
#3-MW Maryland (led 60-32) blew out their opponents. A weird start as
15 higher seeds won (last year only 10) and all the teams with over 18
turnovers won (Gonzaga (24), Utah (21), Maryland (21), Purdue (19)).
#9-MW St. Louis may have had a 4-game win steak over top teams Cincy and
DePaul but Utah has coach Rich Majerus- that's now 8 straight first
round victories. Only in March Madness....

Unofficially (pending payments and mail-in entries), thirty-six (36)
entries have been entered in our 6th Annual pool which ties last year's
record. If it holds up, the $360 pot will be broken down the same as
last year ($180 for 1st, $90 for 2nd, $60 for 3rd, and $30 for 4th).
Thanks to all who are participating and good luck (not too much luck).

After one day, there is a 10-way tie for first with 30 points, tying
a record. In the previous pools, only five have managed a 28 point start
or better and this year there are 20 with at least 28 points. Three entries,
SLINKY DUDE (Indiana St.), BETHEON (St. Louis), and CRAIGS99 (Fresno St.)
have had one of their Final Four picks out already. MONEY nearly had a
perfect record, but the last game of the day had Utah winning.
