HWCI® POOL # 3:

HWNCAA-SMT UPDATE

3/31/97, Issue # 14.6.1 "Simon says 'Wildcats win!- uh.., the Arizona one'"

In a game that meant nothing... well, to this pool at least, both Wildcat teams fought it out to the very end.  Once again, Arizona blew a lead late in the second half, but wound up winning it in  overtime (thanks to the courtesy line), 84-79, over Kentucky.  This was the first time a team beat three #1 seeds (Kansas-SE, UNC-E, Kentucky-W).  If Arizona got their paws on #1MW-Minnesota (beaten by Kentucky in the semifinals), they probably would've beaten them, too- but alas, the most you can face are three #1 seeds.  Miles Simon (30 points) along with the refs (who sent Arizona to the line 41 times) led the Arizona Wildcats (25-9) to their first national title in basketball.  Sophomore Ron Mercer of Kentucky did not have a great game and fouled out in his last college game.  FYI, the other Wildcat vs Wildcat final was in 1951 when Kentucky beat the Kansas State Wildcats.  Kentucky (35-5) failed to repeat as champions, though many did not even expect them to go this far.  A Pac-10 team has now won two of the past three titles (UCLA 1995).

As for the pool, four ties were settled by the tiebreaker.  Both teams combined for 163 points.  RHODES and EZRA were the closest, just three points off.  LENNY took sixth place over BIX PIX; LOCBOY took 8th over HENG; DUKE took 12th over THE FABONE; and in Tuan's conflict of interest, his RHODES' entry took 14th over his RODERICK's entry.  Eleven finished with 100 points or more and eleven finished with less than 100 points.  No one picked Arizona to win it all, the first time this has happened.

We can now divide the money accordingly:

FIRST PLACE  MAX (Sean)                    116 points  $125.00

SECOND PLACE:THE FLYING ELVI (Brian)115 points   $ 60.00

THIRD PLACEJAYBIAN II (Jason)          113 points  $ 35.00
