HWCI® POOL # 3:

HWNCAA-SMT UPDATE

3/29/97, Issue # 13.5.2 "And we have a winner..."

#4-SE Arizona upset another #1 seed, this time the North Carolina Tar Heels, 66-58, to advance to the NCAA Finals for the first time in school history.  No late second half collapse this time for Arizona.  This game guaranteed MAX at least second place and eliminated BAD ASS II and HENG.  This also assured that none of the top three finishers will have picked the correct champion, the first time in HWCI NCAA Pool history.

The second game saw #1-W Kentucky tire out #1-MW Minnesota in the second half to advance to the Finals to defend their NCAA title, 78-69. Minnesota eventually succumbed to the Wildcats'  pressure defense and committed 26 turnovers.  Well, this game produced our three money winners.

This is the third straight year that the HWCI NCAA Pool Champion has been known BEFORE the final game.  This is the second time all three money winners have been known BEFORE the final game.  This is the first time any (much less all) of the top three finishers DID NOT pick the correct NCAA Champion (three picked Kentucky-all eliminated and no one picked Arizona).  If Arizona wins, it will be the first time NO ONE picked the correct champion.  Okay, okay, you want to know who are the three people that are going to be a tad richer.

FIRST PLACE:                   MAX (Sean)                           116 points             $125.00

SECOND PLACE:             THE FLYING ELVI (Brian) 115 points             $ 60.00

THIRD PLACE:                  JAYBIAN II (Jason)              113 points             $ 35.00

The Selanders (Brian and Jason) claim two spots, the first time two brothers have ended up in the top three together.  JAYBIAN II becomes the first person to win money twice, giving him a lifetime total of $145.  MAX, in his second try, becomes the 1997 HWCI NCAA Tournament Pool Champion.  The 116 points by MAX is the lowest total for a HWCI NCAA Champion.  Seventeen of the previous 31 entries have had a point total higher than 116.

For placement purposes (if you have any pride), several players will be tied and the tiebreaker will be used.  Thanks for playing!
