3/13/97, Issue # 3.1.1 "Let the games begin..."

    Fourteen of the top seeds won their games providing defending HWCI NCAA Pool Champ JAYBIAN II and DUKE with a record 15-1 Thursday, good for 30 points and the lead.  One of the top seeds that lost was #8 Indiana to #9 Colorado, hardly an upset.  The other game even most experts predicted would happen, with #12 College of Charleston getting their 23rd consecutive win... and some respect, knocking off #5 Maryland.  Just five of the 22 entrants went Charleston's way.  UCLA didn't disappoint anyone this time, eclipsing last year's 41 point total (vs Princeton) in the first 16 minutes and providing the most convincing win of the day over #15 Charleston Southern, 109-75.  Two #1 teams struggled, with North Carolina winning by just eight points over Fairfield (11-19) and Kansas by just 14 over Jackson St (14-16).  The other #1 seed in action today, Kentucky, routed Montana.  #12 Princeton almost upset another Pac-10 team, falling just short of Cal, 55-52.  #4 Villanova outran Long Island U (LIU), 101-91.

    #8 Purdue rallied to win on overtime, giving seven people with a perfect 8-0 in the first half of the day, with all the top seeds winning.  At the end of the day, ten players are tied for 6th with 26 points.

KARL CHILDERS starts off the slowest, with just 20 points.

    Now, here is what we have.  There are currently 22 entries (19 people), three more than last year.  What we are waiting for are for some entries that might arrive via snail mail, and if the entries are postmarked no later than Wednesday, then they'll be admitted.  It is very unlikely, however.  The $220.00 pot will be tentatively split up as: 1st-$125.00, 2nd-$60.00, and 3rd-$35.00.  The names of the contestants are listed below the bracket.
