The team that takes the raspberry for finishing dead last is our good ol' U-S-of-A. In the battle of the co-hosts for the 2002 World Cup, South Korea (30th) finished just above Japan (31st). Spain, the top seed in Group D, finished the highest of the non-qualifiers (17th). Except for Spain, the other seven teams who were the top seed won their groups. Chile snuck into the next round without winning a match (3 ties) while Group F saw both Germany and Yugoslavia attain seven points. Argentina and France were the only teams to win all three matches while Japan and the USA lost all three. While every team scored at least one goal, only Argentina didn't allow one. France has the best goal differential (+8) while South Korea had the worst (-7). France also scored the most goals (9). In one of the weirdest World Cups we have seen six coaches fired or resign (is Sampson next?); three teams who may not have finished the first round (Yugoslavia due to possible sanctions (they would have been replaced by Hungary), Iran (denied, of course, but supposedly wanted to withdraw due to a controversial American film shown in France), and Germany (wanted to withdraw due to German thugs nearly putting a French officer in a coma); and a rash of yellow and red cards. Here is a quick look at the final group standings, followed by the non-qualifiers ranked 17th-32nd. At the end, the Round of 16 schedule is given. ----------------- ROUND 1 STANDINGS ----------------- GROUP A W-L-T PT GF/A GROUP B W-L-T PT GF/A ---------------------- ---------------------- yx-Brazil 2-1-0 6 6/3 yx-Italy 2-0-1 7 7/3 x-Norway 1-0-2 5 5/4 x-Chile 0-0-3 3 4/4 Morocco 1-1-1 4 5/5 Austria 0-1-2 2 3/4 Scotland 0-2-1 1 2/6 Cameroon 0-1-2 2 2/5 GROUP C W-L-T PT GF/A GROUP D W-L-T PT GF/A ---------------------- ---------------------- yx-France 3-0-0 9 9/1 yx-Nigeria 2-1-0 6 5/5 x-Denmark 1-1-1 4 3/3 x-Paraguay 1-0-2 5 3/1 S.Africa 0-1-2 2 3/6 Spain 1-1-1 4 8/4 S.Arabia 0-2-1 1 2/7 Bulgaria 0-2-1 1 1/7 GROUP E W-L-T PT GF/A GROUP F W-L-T PT GF/A ---------------------- ---------------------- yx-Holland 1-0-2 5 7/2 yx-Germany 2-0-1 7 6/2 x-Mexico 1-0-2 5 7/5 x-Yugoslav 2-0-1 7 4/2 Belgium 0-0-3 3 3/3 Iran 1-2-0 3 2/4 S.Korea 0-2-1 1 2/9 USA 0-3-0 0 1/5 GROUP G W-L-T PT GF/A GROUP H W-L-T PT GF/A ---------------------- ---------------------- yx-Romania 2-0-1 7 4/2 yx-Argenta. 3-0-0 9 7/0 x-England 2-1-0 6 5/2 x-Croatia 2-1-0 6 4/2 Colombia 1-2-0 3 1/3 Jamaica 1-2-0 3 3/9 Tunisia 0-2-1 1 1/4 Japan 0-3-0 0 1/4 x-Advances to Round of 16 y-Wins group title ------------------------- FINAL BOTTOM 16 STANDINGS ------------------------- Rnk GRP TEAM W-L-T PTS GF/A GD ------------------------------------------ 17 D Spain 1-1-1 4 8/4 +4 18 A Morocco 1-1-1 4 5/5 0 19 E Belgium 0-0-3 3 3/3 0 20 G Colombia 1-2-0 3 1/3 -2 21 F Iran 1-2-0 3 1/4 -3 22 H Jamaica 1-2-0 3 3/9 -6 23 B Austria 0-1-2 2 3/4 -1 24 C South Africa 0-1-2 2 3/6 -3 25 B Cameroon 0-1-2 2 2/5 -3 26 G Tunisia 0-2-1 1 1/4 -3 27 A Scotland 0-2-1 1 2/6 -4 28 C Saudi Arabia 0-2-1 1 2/7 -5 29 D Bulgaria 0-2-1 1 1/7 -6 30 E South Korea 0-2-1 1 2/9 -7 31 H Japan 0-3-0 0 1/4 -3 32 F USA 0-3-0 0 1/5 -4 -------------------- ROUND OF 16 SCHEDULE -------------------- Sat., 6/27: #49(1). 1A-Brazil vs. 2B-Chile, Noon (PDT) #50(2). 1B-Italy vs 2A-Norway, 7:30 am (PDT) Sun., 6/28: #51(4). 1D-Nigeria vs. 2C-Denmark, Noon (PDT) #52(3). 1C-France vs 2D-Paraguay, 7:30 am (PDT) Mon., 6/29: #53(6). 1F-Germany vs. 2E-Mexico, 7;30 am (PDT) #54(5). 1E-Netherlands vs 2F-Yugoslavia, Noon (PDT) Tue., 6/30: #55(8). 1H-Argentina vs 2G-England, Noon (PDT) #56(7). 1G-Romania vs. 2H-Croatia, 7:30 am (PDT) France on top- for now...
