June 8, 1998 Issue # 4.0.4 HWCI WORLD CUP TOURNAMENT POOL '98 ================================== Just two days away from the most-watched event in the world. In usual HWCI fashion, most will be entering as the deadline nears (myself included). Nine official paid entries are already in with a hope of 15-20, pushing the 1st place prize over $90.00. Several people will be mailing in their entries. Please mail your entry (page 3 of the attached Microsoft Word doc "1998hw~2.doc") and a check for $10.00 per entry (payable: Scott Tamashiro) to: Scott M Tamashiro 14503 Ermita Ave. La Mirada, CA 90638-4124 - (714) 522-6729 - scott@hwci.com The envelope must be postmarked with a Tuesday PM stamp. However, if you decide to mail it in Tuesday night and you're not sure if it will be postmarked Tuesday, then you MUST EMAIL me Tuesday night (before 11:59 pm PDT) your predictions for the Wednesday matches: 1- Brazil vs Scotland 2- Morocco vs Norway If your envelope is postmarked "Wednesday AM" and I don't have your Wedensday predictions, then the envelope and check will be returned to you. Also, let me know via email or phone whether or not you've mailed in your entry so I can get a good headcount. Here are some more tips and tidbits as the deadline nears: * Complete rosters and schedules are now available on FIFA.COM. * It is becoming likely that the pool will be run on an Excel spreadsheet for the whole tournament, not just the round-robin. This will complicate things for me, but I'll deal with it. * The World Cup Pool page should be up on HWCI.COM by Wednesday morning. The page may be mirrored to www-scf.usc.edu/~lphung/wc98 as I have easier access to this at work. * Unofficial entry lists (and what everyone picked) will be posted on Wednesday (probably after work, PM)... the official entry list will be posted on Saturday morning after I get the mail entries and figure out who's paid or not. * It would be nice to do a daily update, but that may not be feasible. The minimum updates will be on 6/11 (after four matches), 6/15 (after each team has played one match), 6/19, 6/22 (after each team has played two matches), 6/24, and 6/26 (after round-robin). Each matchday after that I should be able to do an update. The email update will be first with the web update coming later. * Remember, for the tiebreakers, you can pick in 1/2 goal increments (e.g., 4.5 goals) for total goals in 3rd and Final Matches AND instead of picking the team who will win 3rd place, you are picking the four groups (A through H) you think the 3rd place winner will come from. Here's the general format, again: -------- Name: Email/Phone#: Nickname: Round Robin Winners Group A (6): Group B (6): Group C (6): Group D (6): Group E (6): Group F (6): Group G (6): Group H (6): Round of 16 (16) (Top 2 teams from each group): Quarterfinalists (8) (Top 2 from A/B, C/D, E/F, G/H): Semifinalists (4) (Top team from A/B/C/D and E/F/G/H): Finalists (2) (Top 2 teams): Champion (1): Total goals in 3rd and Final matches (can chose in 1/2 goal increments): Four groups (A-H) 3rd Place winner will come from: -------- Viva la France!
