Issue # 6.2.2 “Close But Chalk”

Well, D-Day is here… find out if you are still alive in our pool (and amazingly, 114 entries are!).  So you may have thought you were out, but you aren’t!  Even I’m still alive with Gonzaga and Georgetown in my Final Four (though I can’t finish higher than 3rd).  Remember, we’ll have 1st-6th prizes (plus a Bonus prize for those eliminated).

DUNK CITY STILL ALIVE; TOP SEEDS SURVIVE
DenverDunks1 tops pool but ChasCroix has best chance to win
TEMPLE CITY, CA/CERRITOS, CA (smt)- It’s hard to believe that this team is just 17 years old and only in its 2nd year of postseason eligibility.  So no history to hang on to, no legacy to rely on.  But #15S-Florida Gulf Coast is writing the book on the team by playing exciting and tough basketball beating another physical team in #7S-San Diego St.  Instead of a 21-2 run (vs Georgetown) it was a 17-0 run to break the game open.  FGCU is the first #15 seed and a record 3rd Florida team in the Sweet 16 and will face fellow-Floridian team #3S-Florida.  The 3rd Florida team, #2E-Miami was one of four top seeds who needed a big sequence or break to advance.  Whether it was a blown (favorable) call (#2W-Ohio St and #2E-Miami), a 12-2 run to end the game (#1E-Indiana), or overcoming 21 turnovers (#1S-Kansas).  #2MW-Duke won handily while #13W-La Salle got a last second layup to win their 3rd straight game in a battle of two double-digit seeds.

DenverDunks1 was 1 of 93 entries to go 6-2 today and is now our leader with 83 points.  He and The Rat Pack (4th-Tied, 81) each finished 13-3 in the 3rd round.  Macie’s Mom went from 1st to a tie for 38th (75) by being the only one to get just 2 teams correct today. Kona Coast Sliders got just 5 of 16 Sweet 16 teams to take over last place (55).  But it’s The New Mrs. B  (129th-T, 56) who is in the worst shape as she has just 2 of her Elite 8 teams left.

After 48 games (52 if you count the First Four which we don’t), many thought they had their bracket busted but in reality, only 17 of the 131 entries are officially eliminated from winning any of the top 6 prizes.  So go tape up that torn bracket.  Better yet, 64 entries still have a chance to win the pool.  ChasCroix (4th-T) has the best chance to win the pool (9.7%) and money (31.7%). Lastminute (2nd-T, 82) and The Rat Pack each have 29-30% chance to win money. Flying Ace is tied for 2nd but only has a 0.97% chance to win the pool.  The prize money distribution and Bonus Prize details (hint: it’s the same as last year) will be announced later this week.

We are now on Twitter (@HWCI_Pools).  As I did for our HWCI Euro Soccer Pool when it debuted, I will post using #hwcincaa mini-updates during the day so you can follow without being on Twitter (and if you are, please use #hwcincaa).  Please join our Facebook HWCI NCAA Pool Group or post comments on our blog.

Tids & Bits  If you’ve forgotten who picked, you can look at anyone’s bracket here. or see everyone’s pick in a list style here… 2 #14 seeds and 5 #13 seeds have previously made the Sweet 16 and all lost that game… the Big 10 went 2-2 giving them 4 teams in the Sweet 16; the Big East has 3 and the Pac 12 and ACC have 2 each; the MWC, SEC, Atlantic Sun, Atlantic 10, and Big 12 have one a piece… no one lost their champion today…

No overtime games yet? I don’t count the 0.2 second left 3-point shot by Ohio St a buzzer beater…
