HWCI® POOL # 3:

HWNCAA-SMT UPDATE

3/14/97, Issue # 4.1.2 "Coppin State it is"

Whereas Thursday proved stable for the top seeded teams, Friday was just the opposite.  The biggest upset of the tournament was little #15 Coppin State which handily knocked off #2 South Carolina, 78-65.  Of course, no one picked this, thus RODERICK became the first person to get its pick to win it all out of the tournament.  The other Carolina team, #7 NC-Charlotte, knocked Georgetown out of the first round for the first time in its past fifteen tournament appearances.  The first major upset of the day, though, was #14 Tennessee-Chattanooga over #3 Georgia. #10 Texas and #10 Providence also won their games.  (Side note:  My girlfriend and I are playing each other for dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and she amazingly picked Coppin St., Tenn-Chat., and Texas). Texas vs Coppin St???  Amazing.  #11 USC couldn't make free throws and fell to Illinois.  #2 Duke survived a scare by #15 Murray St. and #1 Minnesota rolled all over SW Texas St.

DUKE holds its lead but this time tied with BAD ASS I, with 52 points, tying a HWCI record.  There is now a seven-way tie for second with 50. THE FABONE, COWGIRL IN LOVE, and HENG all went 9-7, setting a new record for Friday, and tying the record overall in the first round.  KARL CHILDERS again brings up the rear with 40 points.  This same range (40-52 points) occurred last year.  For those at the bottom, REALISTIC MOBELFAKTA was last with 40 points in 1996 and came back to battle for the money as early as the fourth round.  So don't despair.... yet.  Dennis has both of his picks, DUKE (tied #1) and LENNY (tied #3), near the top of the heap.

ENTRIES:        22

FIRST PLACE:    $125.00

SECOND PLACE:   $ 60.00

THIRD PLACE:    $ 35.00

Sixteen picked Kansas to be at the Big Dance, with 12 saying Kansas will win it all.  Fourteen have Kentucky at the final, but only three think they'll win.  Four pick North Carolina to win all six games and two die-hard UCLA fans have their team celebrating on March 31.  One lone person had South Carolina at the top... oh, well.  Good luck to all!
